Lions Go International

After being contacted by C.K. Football Academy from Istanbul, Turkey, the lions under11′s took part  in their first 9 a-side match.

The football played by both teams was very entertaining and flowed freely.

Passing their way out from the back the Lions notched the first of 9 goals with a display of skill and discipline that also kept a clean sheet.

Well done to Harry & Colin on terrific debut performances and Thank You to C.K. Football Academy for choosing Cherry Hinton Lions as worthy opponents.

Who knows maybe we can tour Turkey and return the compliment.

Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad

Next seasons under 11′s took part in their third Thurlow tournament and won it for the second time.
They were unbeaten in seven games, scoring 15 goals and conceeding 1.
Thanks to Thurlow Youth for another well run tournament.

Josh Coulson Capped By England

Former Cherry Hinton Lions player and Cambridge United captain Josh Coulson has been capped by England.

The centre half admitted making his England “C” debut was one of the proudest moments of his career as he came on as a substitute for the last 16 minutes which saw his side lose 1-0 to Portugal under-23s in the International Challenge Trophy final at Northampton.

Portugal fielded two full Internationals for the game in the form of alleged £8m Arsenal target Yannick who was impressive on the night and picked up the Man of the Match award, as well as Andre Bernardes Santos, both plying their trade at Sporting Clube de Portugal.

A very proud but disappointed Coulson said: “It was a very proud moment for me to get on because I was on the bench and didn’t come on last time (in the 1-0 semi-final win over Belgium), but to lose was gutting.

“At least I got a couple of decent touches. There were a couple of times when I’ve come on for Cambridge this season and haven’t even touched it! “I got a medal and I will get a cap, which is nice, even though we lost.”

Despite Portugal fielding a side containing players from Spain’s top flight La Liga, England “C” manager Paul Fairclough had a lot of positives to take from the game despite his frustration at the simplicity of the goal they conceded on 63 minutes.

A curling freekick from Luis Fernandes came back off the post only to fall Johan Tavares who struck home from 6 yards.

Coulson said: “It was a lucky goal really, and we had a good chance at the end which I was already celebrating about because it looked it was in.”

In the closing minutes George Donnelly of Fleetwood had the ball squared to him by Fairclough but with the massive chance to take the game into extra time, could only drag his shot wide of the post.

Josh added; “But the Portugal players are looking to play in their first team and we never got outclassed by them. “I thought we stood by them and at times out-fought them, but it just wasn’t to be on the night.”

“It’s a shame because they’re a good bunch of lads and we can be proud of how we performed.”

Match Report: U15b v Histon Hornets B (Cup)

Sunday 14th November 2010 Cup fixture

Cherry Hinton Lions B v Histon Hornets B

First Half

After the minutes silence that was impeccably acknowledged by both squads the Lions started the stronger of the two teams.

In the 8th minute Wade Reeve took a free kick from deep inside his own half that found Ellis Jewell’s head. Ellis’ flick on found Idris Hagos on a good run and Idris’ left foot shot rolled in the corner of the net to open the scoring. Lions 1 – 0 Histon

The Lions looked very organised and comfortable playing the ball round in some good passing moves, making the Hornets work very hard to get the ball. Only a minute later Vinish Bhuva found Wade Reeve with a pinpoint pass and from Wade’s pass Chris Fulcher lobbed the ball over the stranded Histon keeper, but unfortunately just over the bar too.

Dominic Ford increased the Lions lead in the 14th minute with an excellent lobbed volley that gave the Histon keeper no chance and added another great goal to Dom’s scoring tally so far this season – he nearly added a third only linutes later with a good low shot that sneaked just past the post after a good cross from Ellis Jewell and a neat lay off by Idris Hagos. Lions 2 – 0 Histon

James Sanford, Tom Saunders, Matt Auker and Levi Simon looked very settled in defence and Vinish Bhuva in goal was commanding well and kicking the best of the season so far with distance and accuracy.

On 24 minutes Ellis Jewell saw his volley from 25 yards saved well by the keeper and Idris Hagos also made him work hard down at his right post only seconds later. Working well together Ellis & Idris both tested the keeper another couple of times each before the half hour mark, although he was reacting well and keeping the score to a respectable level.

James Sanford marauded forward and added the third goal of the match with an excellent turn and volley that the keeper had no chance to save as it rocketed into the top of the net after a good corner from Ellis Jewell and some good battling by Ashley Dale in the box. Lions 3 – 0 Histon

Only a minute later the Hornets grabbed one back with the Lions sleeping after the goal celebration. Lions 3 – 1 Histon

With the last action of the half Vinish Bhuva made an excellent save low doen to his right hand post to deny the Hornets a second.

Half Time – Lions 3 – 1 Histon

Second Half

The Lions came out with purpose at the beginning of the second half and within 2 minutes Ellis Jewell battled well to break down the defence and his powerful cross goal low shot eluded the keeper and lodged in the corner of the net to put the Lions in control. Lions 4 – 1 Histon

After 4 minutes of the restart, Ashley Dale and Levi Simon combined well and Ashley’s shot made the keeper shudder on the near post as he blocked it for yet another corner.

The next twenty minutes of the game saw the Lions take complete control of the game, but without creating too many chances and the Hornets were unlucky to see two chances hit the Lions woodwork after a couple of speculative long range shots. They were eventually rewarded with a second gaol on 70 minutes when the Lions failed to clear. Lions 4 – 2 Histon

Usama Akkouche, Cameron Scarr, Liam Fox-Teece, Chris Fulcher and Ronan Pike-Burke all played their part in settling the Lions down and working hard to regain possession. Thye played some good passing moves creating some good chances for Ellis Jewell, Ashley Dale and Idris Hagos, with Wade Reeve eventually grabbing the well deserved 5th goal with a low stabbed shot that sneaked under the keeper’s body at the near post. Lions 5 – 2 Histon

Jordan Charnley and Archie Diangson were unable to participate in this game, due to injury, but we hope to welcome them back to the squad next week.

The Hornets managed to grab a third as the Lions went for more goals, with a lob over Vinish Bhuva that was very well executed in the dying minute Lions 5 – 3 Histon

Final Score – Lions 5 – 3 Histon

Well done boys, through to the next round of the cup.

If we keep battling and applying ourselves as we have for the past two games we will definately win more than we lose for the rest of the season.
